the latest FB scruffy dog poll ~ {Ontario pet exclusive photographer}

if you follow the scruffy dog Facebook page , then you’re already aware of the polls we have over there, asking pet-related questions.  some are purely for fun, others are a little educational as we learn more about you and your pet.

this week’s poll is about how you came to be the guardian of your current 4-leggers.  we want to know how our followers met their Rovers and Fifis and Fluffys too!

the poll is fun and easy … a few clicks … and if you follow the scruffy dog Facebook page (and why wouldn’t you?) you’ll see the results posted in a week or so!

you can get to the poll through this link.

of course, i can’t possibly do a blog entry without a few photos, so here’s a little before-and-after of our most recent scruffy rescue boy, merrick … rescued at 6 years of age …

his “before photo”, taken by the not-so-nice puppymill/breeder people who wanted rid of him …

and merrick today … with a little love, guidance, training, and no more breeding and abuse.

so go on over to the scruffy dog Facebook page and click the Polls tab on the left, or follow this link.  we’d love to hear from you.  and if the way by which you became guardian of your 4-legger(s) is not on the list, please drop us a line on the Facebook page, and we’ll rectify it pronto!

ALSO if you have an incredible rescue story, you know we’d love to hear it!  you can share it in the comments below and/or share your rescue pup/cat’s photo on the scruffy dog Facebook page! (please keep photo submissions to one-per-pet).

looking forward to seeing the results from the latest poll!  have fun!

  • Linda BlackI really enjoy your blog and the wonderful pets you photograph.
    Not being on facebook and having no desire too, even if it means I can’t be part of your poll, I did want to let you know about my furry doofuses. One is Rune, our 2 1/2 year old female Alaskan Malamute, adopted from her breeder as a pup and one of the nicest Mals I’ve ever had. Our other character, Lodden, is a 4 or 5? year old rescue Malamute?/Siberian?/Rough Collie who came to us from Taiwan. I’ll keep it short and if you’re interested in his story you can read it below.
    To give you an idea why I chose a dog from out of country I’ll mention this. The pounds in Taiwan were coming under fire for their high euthenasia numbers so (and I find this really heartbreaking and disgusting) they just don’t feed the dogs and they die “naturally” of starvation or prolong their lives by eating the already dead dogs.
    TUAPA, the no kill shelter, has over a thousand dogs in their care and while the dogs are cared for they only get out into the yard once a week. I couldn’t say no when I saw this furry formerly starved and still skinny dog who was living in a climate that was so ill suited to his breed. So he came to live with us and has become such a sweet member of our family who is still putting on weight slowly with a raw food diet. And Rune thinks he’s the best toy ever.

this is Orville ~ {Waterloo, Ontario pet photographer}

this tall, dark, and handsome man is Orville …

dashing, isn’t he?

this boy was adopted from the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society.  as you can tell from the backdrop, this shoot was done in the graffiti tunnel right after Memphis’ dad, Don, painted it specially for Memphis’ custom shoot.  i didn’t want the painting to go to waste after Memphis’ shoot so we booked Orville for a quickie …

you’ll be seeing more of Orville later this year as he is scheduled for a proper big shoot in the fall …

… when he can run and fetch and be a goofball on some real doggy turf, not some grotty train tunnel.

still, Orville was a good sport about his little graffiti shoot … even though i know it was tough for this high-powered athlete to sit still for this kind of shooting …

thanks, Orville.  and i’m looking forward to seeing you really let loose in a more species-appropriate setting this fall!

goodbye sweet Riley ~ {Toronto pet photographer}

it is with a heavy but settled heart that i bring you the sad news of the passing of yet another member of the scruffy dog family. and for those who aren’t entirely familiar with how we run around here, all of our clients become scruffy family members, as the hours spent during our photo shoots develop a bond and an understanding that can be seen in no other light than: “family“.  you can see Riley’s original blog post here.

it’s always sad when one of my clients loses their beloved 4-legger … but at the same time, i often feel settled in the fact that these dogs have lived fabulous, loved lives, regardless of their beginnings — whether purchased puppies, shelter dogs, or puppymill.  and Riley was certainly and deeply loved in his 17 years of life with artist Shelley and her now-grown sons.

as Shelley writes: “… we said goodbye to our beloved Riley.  He had a great life and a gentle death.” what more could a little scruffy ask for?

i’ll never forget our afternoon stroll in the park that pleasant fall day … Riley soaking up all the sights and smells, Shelley deeply connecting with her boy, and poor Daniel lugging my equipment.  this little dog had an undeniable connection with all of his humans.

i know that a number of the scruffy dog followers will always remember Riley as the little scruffy dog with the ears.

this boy certainly had a way with his ears.

i think he could tell entire stories with those ears.

to Shelley and Daniel and Josh, you know my heart is with you during this empty time, but have faith that Riley’s spirit and energy still surrounds you.  i look forward to seeing you soon.

  • Cindy MaysMy heart aches for Riley’s family as tears fell scrolling through these beautiful pictures. I too lost a fur baby boy not too long ago after 17 1/2 years and I only wished I had the beautiful memories in print that Illona has blessed you with of Riley – cherish them and know that he is prancing in the grass of heaven waiting for all of you.ReplyCancel

  • sherry bolesI am so sorry for this family’s loss.

    He was absolutely adorable! I know all these wonderful images are a huge comfort and lasting treasure to his family.

    In the passing of my four-legged babies, I am always comforted by images of them that I can still hold. …A good reason to get those babies photographed! 🙂ReplyCancel
