orville ~ sneak peek ~ {Waterloo, Ontario pet photographer}

if you follow the scruffy dog blog, you already met Orville during  his train tunnel shoot.  and if you follow scruffy dog‘s facebook page, you’ve already seen a few sneak peeks of this tall, dark and handsome boy … yes, the facebook page is where you see a lot of fun sneak peeks, so do check it out.  but for those of you without facebook, well, here’s a sneak peek of this most handsome and highly active rescue boy from his shoot last week …

definitely no denying there’s some pointer in him …

i love the dramatic shots we got of this ball-obsessed beast, so you’ll definitely be seeing more of Orville on the blog …

murdock and mable together ~ {Ontario pet-exclusive photographer}

i forgot that i had these shots of the dynamic duo — Mable and Murdock — set aside on the desktop to share with you all.  i had such a fun shoot with these two and they were such stellar models, that i simply had to give them each their own blog entry.  you can see a sampling of sweet Mabel’s images here, and Murdock can be found here.

but then there are those photos that capture the sometimes zany, sometimes annoying, and sometimes close relationship between these two.

did i mention “annoying”?  yup, Murdock can be such a little monster to his older sister …

in or out of the water …

… staying in the shallows in order stalk his retrieving sister and jump her when she reached shore.

even amongst the harsh, cut stalks of the wheat field, Murdock never let up …

but Mabel always seemed to have the last word … and in some relationships, that’s all that matters.

i loved working with these two, and am headed to the lab today to pick up all of their stuff.  can’t wait to see it all!

gill ~ {Guelph, Ontario pet photographer}

this sweet old girl is Gill …

she’s 14.  she’s a little a lot deaf now — which can make getting her attention a little tricky during a shoot — but this old girl still loves a good walk.

and a little sight-seein’ …

Gill’s shoot took place at high-noon … the time of day you never want to shoot.  unfortunately, Gill’s mom couldn’t arrange any other time … so the only thing i could do is try to find us some shade for our session.  you’d never know that these photos were taken in a dark cedar forest.

having seen the colours of Gill’s owners’ home, however, and being told their goal was a big wall piece, i knew that a wheat field would give us the best tones for those walls.  but high noon in an open wheat field?  you can see in this unedited image how harsh the shadows are, not to mention how the bright light causes this old girl to squint.

because of the harsh light and shadows inherent in midday shoots — the absolute worst time of the day — the post work on these kinds of images can be extensive in order to salvage details from those unforgiving shadows.

so, shade — when you can find it — is the best alternative …

still, you can’t find shade everywhere … so again, more extensive post work to soften those harsh shadows …

a cool dip during the hot midday was much appreciated by this sweet girl …

and then, back home …

it was great meeting you, Gill.  you’re a grand old girl.

  • Grace VThe black and white shots work really well for her.ReplyCancel

  • RachelOh I just LOVE that last shot! They’re all beautiful, like always, but that one really shows the old girl in her element.

    So if high noon is the no-no time of day to shoot, what time do you prefer? The magic hour before sunset? Or some other time?ReplyCancel

  • Holly Garner-JacksonSuch a sweet old girl. Love the chair shot best. Certainly a warm and snuggly shot!ReplyCancel

  • LucilaSublime & Adorable! Incredible photographs!ReplyCancel

  • Debra DucoteyEnjoyed the lastest blog entry, especially the before and after image. I am still trying to figure out how you get the images so sharp and clear with post processing. The befor pic looks a little soft, but the after image looks sharp and very clear. I just ordered the Lightroom book you recommended, but willing to accept any advice/pointers. :))ReplyCancel

  • Barb KelloggI’ve been following your work for a few months now. Just love it. I’m always eyeing your lighting situations, so I really loved to see the before and after with the harsh sun. (Great recovery in post, btw!) And the collars you mentioned—love ’em! Like the human bracelets, too. Definitely bookmarking that site for the future. (I have a cardigan corgi with a really lush coat, and I think the collar would get lost in the fur.)

    Looking forward to your future posts—you are an inspiration! (I’m glad you are so busy—that’s a good thing!) 🙂

  • MargaretI just love old dogs. 🙂 (Well, I also love young dogs, but you know, something about the old-timers that’s just magical.)ReplyCancel
