peter the cat ~ {Guelph pet photographer}

meet Peter …

things you should know about Peter is that …

… she’s actually a girl

…  she’s got the most gorgeous eyes

… she’s very loved by owner Lori

… she’s all black except for a few white toes.

but what you should also know about Peter is that she’s not very friendly.

at least, not with newcomers.  in fact, Peter goes down as the very first and only client in scruffy dog history who went through a full three-hour shoot with not so much as a single pat or stroke.  frankly, that was Peter’s choice … and to be honest, i need my hands.

in fact, i worried that  — in spite of having worked with some pretty difficult, fearful, shy, and aggressive pets over the years — Peter was also going to be that first client from whom i got nothing.  within minutes of arriving she was spitting up a storm as Lori tried to coax her from trying to run away to the basement, having a small hissing fit, boxing Lori’s hands with some rather significant seriousness.  but don’t misunderstand …

… there’s love between these two.  it seems that Peter just doesn’t much like hands.  instead, Lori nuzzles her with her face …

… and there is definitely affection shared between them.

but me … i had to speak to the paw for most of the shoot.

… or receive the cold shoulder.

… or the paw again.

but when mom wasn’t looking, i did find this girl’s soft spot when i pulled out one of my cat-nip ‘marinated’ mice.  just look at her whipping that thing around … and then: “oh wait, did mom see me actually having fun? can’t have that!”

moving Peter from one ‘location’ to the next wasn’t always easy with peter … it almost always involved some hissing and yowling, but each time she settled quickly for her next round of photos.

but when Peter was done, she was d-o-n-e … headed to the basement where she’d wanted to go from the beginning.  and with enough photos for her final portfolio, i let her go in peace at last.

thank you, Peter, for putting up with me.  you’re a sport.  hope you enjoy our gallery, Lori.

  • kelli (alice's mama)the pics are fabulous, but the narrative really makes it for me. i was giggling at times and tearing up at others. glad i got to “meet” you, peter, and i’m so glad you have a mama who loves and understands you. awesome job, illona!ReplyCancel

  • CarinaThese pics are great. I find it really difficult to take pictures of pure black cats. You’ve done a wonderful job especially with Peter being so difficult.ReplyCancel

  • MARCIA AGUIARShe has the most amazing eyes!ReplyCancel

  • Holly Garner-JacksonHaha! With my dial up I read all the text before any photo showed up! It took me awhile to realize you were talking about a cat not a snarling, snapping dog! Of course cats have their own sharp points to get across! 😉
These are great, illona! You truly are the cat whisperer!
    Those eyes are gorgeous!ReplyCancel

  • RogerBlack enough to be like shooting a lump of coal. Not easy for sure! Well done.ReplyCancel

  • MargaretIt’s just amazing what you can do, Illona!!! I mean, this cat didn’t want to be a part of a photo shoot, but you not only got some pictures, but got some MAGNIFICENT pictures!!! Lovely cat.ReplyCancel

big boy bentley ~ {Drayton, Ontario pet photographer}

this is Bentley …

yeah, he’s just that happy.  and he’s especially happy when he’s sniffing …

this boy would definitely excel in a tracking class … in fact, he’d probably make a great search dog.  sniffing is his favorite thing.  well, and running …

other things that strike you instantly about Bentley is his amazing eyes …

that big fan of a tail he swishes around …

and the love he has for his mom and dad, Katy and Rob.

we had a great time virtually in Katy and Rob’s back yard … a series of lovely trails along the river, maintained by the neighboring homeowners.

and when i spotted this little field and saw the magical light, i knew we had to spend some time there.

oh, and you might recognize Bentley’s awesome collar.  this is the collar i recommended in an earlier “things-we-love” blog entry.

Bentley wears the collar well and it’s perfect for this mucky-river loving boy.

crazy, stick-fetching beast …

then off to catch the last few rays …

and before heading back to the house we backtracked a little to a wheat field that i’d spotted on my drive to the shoot.  it had to be the absolutely last wheat field standing in all of ontario, and it seemed Bentley was almost as happy as i was to have found it.  i think Bentley calls this stuff wheeeee-at!!

and finally home for a few shots there.

thanks so much, Bentley and Katy and Rob for a great afternoon and evening.  i hope you’re enjoying your gallery.  see you tuesday for your consult!

  • Jenniferthe light in the second shot is amazing, I can’t stand it. Love the HUGE log shot on land and big stick shot in the water too, looks like a fun boy to photograph. P.S. to his owners, it is nice to see someone who knows how to keep a dog’s nails the proper length!!!! LOL! Gorgeous boy.ReplyCancel

  • SimonAnother amazing set of pictures! Lot of them, too, with no filler (and a fine compromise with the WM, looking so much nicer)ReplyCancel

the cat whisperer ~ {Waterloo pet photographer}

it’s always exceedingly encouraging when i can make clients shake their heads in disbelief … when i can prove them wrong or at least make them eat their words as their so-called fearful, shy pets eat treats out of my hands.

meet Mack … and yeah, this is what she looked like when the shoot started.  and trust me, we were shocked and amazed she even stayed put on the couch!

Mack doesn’t like people.  in fact, i’m told she’s not even overly-affectionate with owners Lisa and Ryan.  cats, right?   and when family or friends come to visit, apparently the only thing you’ll see of Mack are the hairs she leaves behind as she beats her hasty exit to go into hiding for their entire visit.

now, granted, knowing a pet isn’t overly affectionate, I won’t even try to pet them, although i did get in a few strokes of her lovely creamy coat.   i basically let Mack be … but when she eventually gave me those soft cat eyes and held my stare for long silent moments, blinking softly, i gave ’em right back to her and told her over and over again what an amazing girl she was.

but with every shattering clack of my huge camera’s shutter, Mack flinched backwards.  so … out came the toy.

it didn’t take long … some well-placed bobs, good teases … and the trick is to always, always, always leave ’em wanting more …

clearly i shoot more dogs than cats, and i’ll be the first to say that — as a general rule — dogs are easier.  because — as a general rule — dogs are dorks.  and you know i say that with utter love for my favorite creature on the planet.  they can be so easily manipulated and cajoled, tempted and directed … a squeaky toy or a smokey-scented treat, a squealing Cuz or even my embarrassingly giddy voice or duck call when i have to pull it out as a last resort.

but cats … well … you gotta know what you’re doing with cats.  you’ve gotta know how to move around the room when you’re with them, how to approach them, which lens to use in order to buy yourself whatever space you might need to make them comfortable … especially the anti-social ones.  i’ve found that sometimes the owners don’t even quite know how to deal with their cats when it comes to a photo shoot, and often it’s best that they just sit back and leave Fluffy to me.

and i should note … you see that vase of flowers on the table behind the couch?   normally i would have asked the owner to move those as they are something of a distraction, particularly in the play-shot two up.  i wanted to ask, but given the energy i was reading from Mack, i knew that if owner Lisa did anything at that point, even something as simple as cross the room and move these flowers, Mack would exit the photo shoot.

Mack was a super-star.  i could sense she was ready to bolt several times, so it was a good 15 minutes or more before i even picked up a camera in spite of this being a short session.  after all, i can’t shoot a cat that isn’t there.  and in the end, i got more shots of Ms. Mack than her sister Mika …

short, little, round Mika …

… like a little tabby ball on legs … with the cutest little, chirping  ‘meow’ you’ve ever heard.

the true challenge, of course, was getting both of these girls in one shot.  Lisa and Ryan had absolutely no doubt that it was an utterly, absolutely impossible task, never to be accomplished.  no way.  no how.  did i happen to mention i’m a bit of a cat whisperer?  give me those beautiful soft eyes, Mack.  thanks, girl.

now your turn, Mika …

thanks, Lisa and Ryan, Mika and most of all shy Mack for a lovely morning … and for reminding me that i’m doing exactly what i should be doing.  i hope you all enjoy your client gallery.

    Cat and dog whisperer indeed!ReplyCancel

  • jennifer metzgerThanks for the kitty fix. Loved your comment about dogs – almost always true except for my shoot last night. She’d fall for something ONCE. Then if I did it again, she would give me a look as if to say “seriously, you think I am that stupid?” Squeaks, meows, treats, nothing worked more than once to get her attention. She was acting like a snobby kitty!

I looove both these kitties but Mack looks amazingly soft. What gorgeous eyes. 4th one down is my favorite. You ARE the cat whisperer…ReplyCancel

  • TatyanaHeh Mack sounds so much like my Tim. I live with him and yet he tends to be very hard to shoot. Especially when I have outgoing Anton that wants to be in everybody’s business.
