Macon – a.k.a. The Barn Cat – is the most recent addition to the scruffy dog household.
During the fall of 2020 I seemed to find a stray cat or kitten in need every time I turned around. In fact, in that Covid autumn alone I managed to rescue/arrange care/rehome a total of ten cats and kittens … all from various situations.
Macon was one of three 4-week-old kittens captured by hand from a barn of ferals. Their siblings had already passed, and it was touch and go whether these three would make it, they were so sick and malnourished. But through generous donations from scruffy dog followers to Charlie’s Fund and the incredible Dr. Amy, these three boys gradually overcame their viruses and began to thrive.
Today, Macon’s two brothers live together with an amazing couple who love them dearly, while Macon stayed on. Let me be clear: it was not my intention to keep any of the kittens. In fact, I felt extremely safe fostering them because the last thing I wanted was another cat. But Mowat had other plans…
Even though I kept them separated until the boys appeared to be past their virus, Mowat could not get enough of the kittens behind the door … and no matter how careful I was each time I came out of the kittens’ room, Mowat picked up their virus … and it hit him hard.
Mowat was down for some time, and it was a truly terrifying time as I wasn’t sure he’d pull through. But no matter how sick he was, Mowat loved the kittens and was almost always cuddled up with one or all three. But it was Macon who seemed to gravitate the most to Mowat, and to Matlin as well.
There really was no keeping these two boys apart … and the longer Macon stayed here the clearer it became that these two boys were destined to be together. In fact, when the couple who now have the other two brothers came for their first visit to meet the boys, Macon didn’t once go and say ‘hi’ to them. He curled up at my feet the entire visit … and I probably should have known then.
But it was Mowat who ultimately decided. As I said, the last thing I wanted was another cat. I always say that Mowat is my cat, and Macon is his.
