happy Father’s Day to Buster’s dad! ~ {Toronto pet photographer}

meet Buster … an amazing, proud, old man, who is surrounded by a truly amazing amount of love.

Buster’s shoot is a Father’s Day gift, so i hope these images and his blog entry are a real surprise.

from Toronto, Buster came to our neck of the woods for his shoot because — like a number of our clients — his owners really liked some of the settings that they have seen on the blog.

14-year-old Buster is suffering from degenerative myelopathy — a progressive spinal cord disease which is affecting his mobility.  but in spite of some rests, this boy was rarin’ to go during the shoot.  in fact, Sara and her sister claimed that they hadn’t seen this old man move so fast and have so much fun in a long time, especially once we got out to our natural setting.  you could hardly hold him back!

on the way between the graffitied train tunnel and our favorite shooting spot, i made sure to stop at a small park to capture the last of the wild flox.  when scouting earlier in the day — checking out the state of the latest graffiti — i passed this amazing patch and just knew that we’d have to make use  of these pretty flowers for our tough pitty boy, so i way-pointed it on the GPS in order not to miss it later that evening during our shoot.  and at that point, with the late afternoon sun, it was glorious.

“woof!”

and then, up to the infamous tunnel of trees for this old boy …

i’d like to take a little time to talk about our Honour Sessions™.  as i mentioned in our most recent newsletter, i’ve struggled over the last few years to come up with a proper name for those very special sessions that we shoot for clients with ailing and aging pets.  other pet photographers call them “bereavement sessions”, but that term has always felt a little too morbid and sad to me.  friend and Minneapolis pet photog Sarah Beth, calls hers Joy Sessions®, but for me, the name still eluded me.  for me, based on the number of these sessions i’ve had over the years, these sessions aren’t always joyful, nor are they sad and full of bereaving.  instead, for me, they are a serious time, a deeply heartfelt time, and — most of all — a truly reflective time.

so, at long last and after much thought, i’ve come up with the name “Honour Sessions”.  these are sessions where the clock stands still … where we do whatever it takes to capture as many unique and powerful images as possible of your beloved pet … where we strive for as much variety as your pet can muster … where we sit and talk, sharing the experience … and through it all, truly honour your pet, the love and bond that connects you, and the lifetime you have shared together.

no matter what, these Honour Sessions™ are always worked into the scruffy dog shooting schedule.  even other clients are happy to shift their sessions to accommodate a sick and ailing pet.  after all, we all know the love of a pet, we all share the common understanding, and as such, share the same compassion.

at the same time, i always advise people not to wait too long to make that booking for their dog.  i’ve had numerous Honour Sessions™ where the clients wished they’d booked a year earlier, when their dogs were still relatively vibrant and able to run and catch a stick, or just walk amongst the grasses.  to me, those are the memories best captured.  but still, many wonders can be worked even with a pet who is relatively immobile, as i’ve done in many Honour Sessions™.  (and by the way, if you don’t already receive the scruffy dog newsletter, drop us a line, and we’ll rectify that, pronto!)

but back to Buster …  during our shoot, you’d hardly know he was struggling.  this big-hearted, never-quit boy was on the move … he had things to sniff, trees to pee on, and lovely long blades of fresh grass to mow down …

in fact, he was so determined to eat this entire field of grass, it was nearly impossible to get just this one shot of him not eating!

yup, still licking his lips from his salad-bar experience as we headed to the shore …

Buster, it was a true pleasure and delight to meet you, and an absolute honour to photograph you.  i hope i have done your courage, strength, and great will-power justice through these photos

Sara and family, i look forward to hearing from you, and i hope this is the happiest Father’s Day ever, for all of you and for Buster most of all.  you have a large gallery of images to sort through.  do not hesitate to contact me for help, and i am here if you would like to set up a studio consult.

and Buster, you three-toed wonder … dude, you’re the best.  just keep on keepin’ on!

goodbye, sweet marley ~ {Toronto, Ontario pet photographer}

some of you may remember sweet man, Marley from his original post two years ago.

i met Marley and his fabulous parents, Tracy and Shawn, in their lovely backyard, one glorious May afternoon, and from the moment i stepped into that magical, magnolia-petaled yard, the bond between these three was unmistakable.

two years ago Marley had mobility issues and was having increasing problems getting around.  our shoot was limited to the backyard and the house, and we helped Marley move from one spot to the next.

but back then Shawn and Tracy were beginning to investigate new avenues for their boy … and some of the lumps and bumps that were impeding his movement were removed shortly after our shoot, which then helped this boy to get around  more easily.

in Tracy’s words:

When he meet you two years ago, he was in a bad way and after our beautiful photo shoot with you we decided to have the lumps removed on his back end.  He recovered so beautifully.  He was doing so well.  He was so loving to our daughter, Stella, who just turned one. He was so gentle with her, even during his last days.

Alas …

After 12 years of loyalty, friendship and love, we had to say goodbye.   His mobility had really begun to fail him again. … It has been over the last few months that he was having accidents in the house, he just couldn’t get up fast enough.  He was such a proud and honourable man, we just couldn’t bear it any longer, we just loved him too much.

I can’t tell you how grateful we are that we have such beautiful photos of Marley that truly capture his kind and gentle soul.  I went back and read the blog entry you wrote about him and I cried and cried again….just like I did when I read it for the very first time.  Thank you, thank you, thank you for honouring him in such a special way.

As Tracy wrote:  He was such a gentle and kind soul, one of a kind.  … and i can attest to the great nobility, gentleness and tenderness of this amazing soul, for in the 3+ very intimate and memorable hours which i spent with Marley and his people, mobility or no mobility, there was no mistaking Marley’s beautiful nature and the love that flowed through him.

today, as i was two years ago, i am deeply honoured to have been there for Tracy and Shawn and Marley … and although i am thrilled that Marley shared his love for another two amazing years after his scruffy dog session, it is still very sad news to hear of his passing.  my thoughts are with Tracy and Shawn today … and my hope is that they can find it in their hearts to open their home and hearts to another 4-legger one day so that wee Stella can continue learning how indescribably valuable pets are in our lives.

wherever you are, sweet Marley, know that you are greatly missed, but your love will live on.  i have no doubt you are running like the wind.  i hope you find my Murph, and maybe Morley too … they’d enjoy a good romp with you.

another sad goodbye ~ {Toronto, Ontario pet photographer}

i’ve been corresponding this week with Harriet, mom of sweet Bridie, over how to cope with the loss of her sweet girl recently.

when i met this sweet little girl last summer for her photo shoot, she was actually in renal failure and had just gotten out of the vet hospital after a several-day stay.  i’ve said it before on the blog, i’ve had a good number of ‘bereavement’ sessions — shoots for ailing dogs whose owners have been told have very little time — and i don’t know what it is, but all except one of these lovely souls have gone on for months after their shoots … a few even exceeding their vets’ expectations by a year or more.  maybe it’s a little scruffy dog magic … but i think it’s mostly the incredible and deep love that owners like Harriet and Tom have for their pets.

under her mom’s phenomenal care, little Bridie  kept going strong … and we even added a fall shoot to capture her ‘puppy’ cut …

Bridie, and Harriet and Tom, are precisely why i do what i do — clients with such a deep love and unbreakable bond with their dog, and who truly appreciate art versus straight portraits of their amazing little girl.

i’ll be working on their deluxe 12×12 coffeetable album.  Harriet’s been waiting for a while for this one … partly because she’s been too busy dealing with Bridie’s health, and also because she’s been waiting for the new scruffy dog photobooks to be developed.  and now that we’ve got them ready to roll out, Bridie’s is going to be our first deluxe book.  i’m looking forward to revisiting all of this gorgeous girl’s images again and designing Harriet and Tom’s book of incredible memories.

in the meantime, my thoughts are with Harriet and Tom.  i know the house and your hearts feel empty, but i know you two will soon be opening your hearts to another … the kind of love you two have to give can’t keep your house empty for long, and i so look forward to meeting whatever soul is to carry on in Bridie’s memory.

in the meantime, i’m glad that Bridie’s images give you comfort.  i’m so very honored to have met your sweet girl and spent time with her, and to have been chosen to capture these very important memories of her.  big hugs to both of you.

if you want to see Bridie’s past blog entries they can be found here, and here.  and her sneak peek was here.  loads of photos!

goodbye to a member of the scruffy dog family ~ {Oakville, Ontario pet photographer}

it is with deep sadness that i have to tell all of you blog followers about the passing of a scruffy dog great, and our oldest family member, sweet, lovely Cassy.

Cassy is quite well-known amongst scruffy dog clients and followers.  during sessions and studio consults, more than any other previous client, it is Cassy’s name that comes up most often: the 17+ year old golden retriever.

but at 18 years of age, Cassy has said goodnight, and i know Christine’s life will not be the same without her girl.  Cassy’s original blog post can be seen here … and i’m sure some of these images are repeats as I’m simply picking a few of my faves.

i’m so honored to have had the opportunity to meet and spend time with this amazingly strong, proud girl, and to have played even a small part in her 18 years of life by capturing images of her in her golden glory.

Christine, my thoughts are with you and your dad.  i know your heart aches and your house feels empty, but i know Cassy’s indomitable spirit will be with you always.

young at heart riley ~ {Toronto pet-exclusive photographer}

this is Riley …

you met him earlier in a sneak peek, and now i can share his fuller blog entry with a sampling from his finished gallery of images.

owner Shelley and her son Dan and i headed into the Riley’s favorite park for a  great walk with the old man on a glorious fall afternoon.  of course, i was very grateful to have Dan acting as my sherpa, lugging my heavy camera bag.  with such a full schedule this fall and some shoots booked back to back, my shoulders were happy to take a break from the burden of the extra camera and lenses.  thanks again, Dan!

not only is the light glorious in the fall …

… but, of course, so are the colours.

and i loved this bridge, even though the light breaking through the trees presented a challenge, and i had to wait for Riley to be in right position.

if you’re wondering, Riley is 16 years young, and is a spitz-poodle cross.  he’s a little hard of hearing and a little short-sighted, but — as my luck would have it — he loved the natural lamb treats i brought … well, almost every client does.

and what you’ve probably already noticed about Riley is that he’s got the coolest, most expressive ears.

what you should also know is that he is deeply, deeply loved.  in fact, i’d venture to say he’s revered.

and he sure loves his boy Dan.

when you think about it, at sixteen years, they basically grew up together.

whether on our walk or at home, Riley always worked those magical ears of his …

thanks for a lovely afternoon, Riley, and Shelley and Dan.  i hope you enjoy your gallery, and i look forward to seeing you again at your studio consult.
