ay chihuahua! ~ {Kitchener dog photographer}

meet Bruiser …

bruiser-dee-135

just had to share a few images from a shoot the other evening of an extra sweet boy.  oh yeah, he looks innocent enough, doesn’t he?  just an absolutely, sweet, delicate chihuahua boy all tucked up in a lovely little nest of grass … soaking up the last rays of afternoon sun.  what a lovely, demure, little dog … or not!

bruiser-dee-712

am i the only one thinking of that crazy squirrel from Ice Age?

bruiser-dee-51

i had a blast with this whacky, wild boy who was often struck with zany bursts of the zoomies as he tore up the field.

bruiser-dee-26

of course, running was the only thing Bruiser had on his mind.  posing’s for sissy’s!

places to go. things to sniff.

thanks for a fun time, Sarah, Jeff and Bruiser.  see you soon at your studio consult.  i hope you enjoy Brusier’s gallery!

it’s important to take time …

… for the important things in life.  and in my case, today, that would be merrick.

as a pet photographer, it’s often easy to get so wrapped up in pointing your cameras at other people’s dogs and cats that you forget to capture those special moments shared with your own … or, as is the case lately, to even take the time to enjoy those special moments with my own scruffies.  i’ve been so swamped with shoots, administration, and post work, that i haven’t spent enough time with the scruffies who share my life and studio with me.  so this afternoon i took a little time away from the desk and played ball with merrick.

first the tease … i let the dog’s out, but forgot the ball.  it’s like the little monkeynuts reads my mind; he knows i’m coming with the ball vs. just letting them out to do their business …

and then the madness ensues …

if this next one doesn’t crack you up, well, you should  probably check yourself for a pulse …  ;)

of course, there are always some misses when it comes to merrick … but he’s learning to focus.

jump-diptych-21

these shots were actually taken as part of a project i’m doing for a group on flickr (probably the #1 online photo management and sharing site).  52 Weeks for Dogs is a group i started almost two years ago at the request of a number of flickr friends after i started my own 52 weeks project for my girl matea.  basically it’s about taking a photo of one dog every week.  the group is populated with a variety of photographers of varying talents and is a fabulous and busy pool of doggie information.  who knew it would take off and become the beast it has?  unfortunately, its popularity has forced us to close its doors temporarily in order to maintain that intimate feel, and new members are admitted as there is room, and at the beginning of each new year for the new project.

anyway, i have to thank the 52 Week group for so many of my favorite photos of merrick — without the challenge of our weekly photos, i know i wouldn’t have dragged out the camera except for client shoots.

so, 52 Weekers, these are for you!  merrick loves ya!

and for those of you who haven’t ‘met’ merrick yet, this boy has been with us less than four months.  we rescued him off of a puppy mill/farm where he was used for stud and clearly had been beaten and kicked around for the first five or six years of his life.  you can read more on his story here.  hopefully it’ll make you rethink pet stores, kijiji, classified ads and backyard breeders.

you’ve come a long way, baby!  (this taken on day 3 after we snagged him … terrified of the camera … using sweet morley as his security blanket) …

third-day-61

hope you’re all enjoying your weekend with your own scruffies, and taking time to enjoy the balls life throws ya, whether they’re curved or not.

we make tails … er … stumps wag

meet big boy Bosco …

bosco-213

he’s an Olde English Bulldogge.  i’m sure i’ll be corrected if i’m wrong, but this breed is a newer recreation of the original British bull-baiting dog, done by combining Bullmastiffs, American Bulldogs and American Pit Bull Terriers.  but don’t dare call them oldie english bulldoggies, not even in jest … i was harshly corrected by a breeder at an event recently for having a little fun with the spelling.  gulp!  fortunately, Bosco here doesn’t care what you call him …

bosco-88

… as long as you’ve got the right treats, you can call him just about anything and he’ll come running.

bosco-174

we had a fun afternoon, starting in the park, rounding up some of the local wildlife …

bosco-72

doing a little cleanup …

bosco-77

checking out the swamp …

bosco-154

and then into the woods for some puppy training …

bosco-191

good boy, Bosco!

bosco-201

proud parents, Katharine and Sheref, definitely love their new boy, and even at five months you can already see the bond forming.

bosco-246

from the park, to home … where i introduced Bosco to the Cuz.

bosco-254

as with all of my shoots, i come equipped with toys, and it’s almost always Cuz balls. why? because even if i happen to walk into a home with a Cuz-hoarding beast of a dog, a new Cuz always, always, always tops the cake … paws down.  Bosco agreed …

bosco-273

even though he had little energy left after our time at the park.  it’s really a wonder Bosco didn’t fall asleep while i had the camera on him … he was SO pooped!

bosco-284

but again, i know which treats to bring.

bosco-291

bosco-324

bosco-3421

but before Bosco could completely retire for the day, we headed to one more location that Katharine and i had in mind … one of my favorite graffiti walls down by the tracks.

bosco-421

wait, was that a train?

bosco-472aged

thank you, Bosco, Katharine and Sheref for a fun afternoon.  i look forward to seeing you at your studio consult.  and i look forward to shooting Bosco again when he’s filled those massive paws of his!

bosco-372

another crazy face

this is Oakley.  and he’s not as crazy as he looks.  really!

oakley-94-edit

i hope to share more of his shoot from this past Sunday soon.  i’ve been a little backlogged with client processing lately, so stay tuned.

we hate litterbugs

lately there seems to be an excess amount of broken glass in the area … sidewalks, trails, and, it seems, even in the Grand River.  there have been times, when using a neighborhood “pass-through”, where the broken bottles smashed for ‘fun’ overnight riddle the sidewalk and the grass to such an extent that there is no safe passage for  dogs or bikes.  times like this, the dogs and i have had to tack on an extra 15 or 20 minutes to our walk just to avoid it.  and i like to think i live in a pretty decent neighborhood!

well, while enjoying a swim and frolic in the Grand River the other day, merrick came out bleeding …

paw-12

… and although not quite stitch-worthy, he’ll be wearing the vet-wrap for many days to come and sticking close to home with very limited activity. on this last point, he is not at all pleased.

paw-5-sized

so please, keep an eye out for dangers such as broken glass and pick up when you can.  myself, i’m going to start carrying an extra bag for glass pick up.  i might even have to start packing a broom and dustpan!  in the meantime, we’ve nicknamed this monkeynuts Flash and try to keep him amused with quieter games of tug.
