the blur that is my boy ~ {Ontario exclusive pet photographer}

as part of the very popular and extremely active 52 Weeks for Dogs group that i created on flickr last year, devoted to one-year projects of weekly photos of your dog,  we sometimes present a weekly challenge for members to take part in.  challenges have ranged from depth-of-field, selective focus, b&w treatment, pop culture, and this week: action blur.

as I lay in bed last night, an image suddenly formed in my mind which i felt would answer the challenge perfectly.  all that was left was to figure out how to execute it with all three scruffies.  i shouldn’t have continued setting up the shot beyond the initial click.  the first one nailed it …

action-blur-01

… my lounging girl, a disdainful aslan looking on, and merrick — a constant blur in our world.

enjoy your weekend, everyone!  i hope it’s not a blur!

added note for all you techies: no, there are no special effects or extra photoshopping tricks here. this shot was accomplished through a slow shutter speed and good dog-wranglin’.

i love me wrigley ~ {Waterloo dog photographer}

just had to share a few images of one of my favorite clients, Wrigley, from our shoot a couple of weeks ago.

wrigley-570

why is he one of my favorites?  because he’s a lab and he’ll do just about anything for treats.  :)

wrigley-540

and because he’s a big, fun-loving goofball …

wrigley-543

… who only pretends to be a hunting dog when he hears a pretend noise.

wrigley-562

plus, the camera just loves him, no matter what he’s doing.

thanks for the fun, Cynthia and Shane, and most of all Wrigley.  i can’t wait to see your gorgeous face on canvas!

tough collars for tough dogs with FREE tags! ~ {cool dog products}

… AND at unbeatable prices.  many of you have probably seen those biothane collars at your local pet-supply stores … those soft, rubbery-plastic collars that come in a myriad of colours, are extremely durable, easily cleaned by simply wiping off, and don’t hold odors.  the ones you get at your local pet-supply store are great, but they can be pricey.

so how about going to the original source of these kinds of collars.  although they seem new to your local pet store, these collars have actually been around for a long time in the hunting dog world, and they don’t cost a fortune.  what’s more, Steve Snell of gun dog supply sells all of his collars with an awesome FREE brass plate ID tag.  these are definitely one of my favorite dog things and matea — my crazy, muddy, puddle-loving wirehaired pointer — has always worn one of these collars.

collar-105

of course, she doesn’t normally wear it in the house.  this is her ‘field’ collar.  these TufFlex collars resist mildew and bacteria, and, as such, are odor-free.  they’re soft and flexible, even in our canadian winters; and even after years of abuse, this collar shows no sign of wear.  i have always preferred the “centre-ring” style, pictured above.  i never understood why this style of collar isn’t more popular.  (A) the centre-ring collar is a “rollover design” that aids in your dog’s safety in case it gets snagged on something in the field, and (B) when it comes to clipping on the leash quickly, bam! the ring is right there.  no struggling to find the ring under your Rover’s chin.

i prefer the 3/4″ collar but it also comes in a 1″ sizenote: you want to be sure to buy the right length (sometimes a little small) so that the centre ring stays at the centre of the neck.

AND, you can get a leash to match …

collar-16

… luxuriously soft, won’t burn your hands, and far more ‘grippy’ than any other leash (other than my super dooper rubber leash which i’ll share with you in another “things we love” entry).

and as i said, the tag is FREE if you order from gun dog supply.

collar-131

and these plate tags are awesome.  no dangling, dingling, clinking, clanging … and no lost ID!

now, admittedly, gun dog supply is a US-based site, so you’ll end up paying shipping, but you won’t get hit with duty if your order is under $20 or so … and these collars are UNDER $10!!

of course, the only thing matea cares about when it comes to a leash and collar, is whether she gets out for a walk.

things we love – JP Schoss

continuing with the “things we love” series, i’d like to present you with a fellow artist i discovered a couple of weeks ago while on a desperate venture for birthday gifts in Elora. fortunately it was my own birthday only a week earlier, so when i fell in love with these steel sculptures by Uxbridge artist Jean Pierre Schoss of Dog Bite Steel, my partner caved and bought me the one most resembling merrick.

dog-bite-steel-61

this little guy stands only 5 1/2″ tall, but Schoss’s pieces range up from there to, well, mammoth-sized.  Schoss works with recycled steel — oil tanks, farm implements, propane tanks, etc.  — and the multi-coloured results have a primitive, comical and whimsical feel to them.  it truly is hard to choose just one.

here’s what Schoss says of his medium:

“The material has a lot of character and always tells a life story.  I sometimes drag things out of the ditches, and then the earth feels better! People often bring me all sorts of things — old tools, farm implements, pieces that have layers of paint from past lives.  I never see just a steel object.  I see the new life waiting to come out of it.”

do check out Schoss’s Dog Bite Steel website to see more of his fabulous work.  and if you’re in Elora, you absolutely MUST stop by Styll Gallery down at 5 Mill Street East to see his work in person (and to see all the other fabulous and affordable art they carry as well).  in fact, after a fruitless shopping excursion through St. Jacobs and the rest of Elora, i managed to find ALL of my needed birthday presents at Styll.  it’s my new one-stop, one-of-a-kind shop!

(the “things we love” series covers all kinds of dog-related items from leashes, beds, treats, toys, outerwear, art, services, etc.  with decades of living with hardcore dogs and putting countless dog products through the wringer, there have definitely been some items which have risen to the top (and many sinkers).  i plan to share these stellar finds with you, so stay tuned for much more!)

some of the things we love – tags!

since even before the inception of this blog almost two years ago i’ve wanted to take time out to share the occasional find …  dog and pet products that truly stand out, that have been scruffy-tested and scruffy-approved … and in turn, maybe steer a couple new people onto some great products.

i’ve started a list of things i intend to share with you, so stay tuned for many more!  and if you have a dog-related business or a dog product and would like it scruffy-tested, let me know!  we’re always thrilled to see and sample new doggie goods!  of course, it should be known that i do not, nor will not, receive any compensation for these plugs.  i do so purely because i believe — truly and deeply — in the products i write about.  and it should be known that the scruffies and i are extremely discriminating.

first up … dog tags.  now sure, some of you might have a quiet couch potato or two, rarely getting past second gear out on the trails … but for those of us with high-energy dogs who run like it’s their last day on the planet, you know first-hand how worthless those cheap tags are that you get made-on-the-spot in those big pet stores.  the letters are illegible by the sixth or eighth month, and that’s only IF the tag is still hanging on the collar!  often the hole in the substandard aluminum or metal-alloy has worn all the way through and the tag has been left somewhere in the bush!

so …  i have two brands of top-grade tags i’d like to alert you to.  first, my favorite dog tags in the world: Red Dingo dog tags

stuff-7

these are funky, eye-catching tags made of heavy-duty stainless steel and coloured enamel.  they come in three sizes, and over thirty different designs.  above, matea is sporting a three-year-old tag in the older “bone” design … it’s just a “small”, and bears only her name on the back … no address or phone number.  for her, the Red Dingo tag is bling.  you’ll see her real ID tag later in this entry.

and here is merrick’s Red Dingo tag … the newer “bone” design.

stuff-6

Red Dingo’s engraving is deep and, so far, shows no signs of wearing.  my only complaint is that although the small-size is best for a dog merrick’s size (20 lbs), it allows for only 3 lines of text.  who doesn’t add a cell-phone number to their dog’s tag these days?  and i know there is debate about whether to have your dog’s address on the tag, but frankly, i’d rather have their address than their name.  what good does it do a rescuer to have the dog’s name vs. the address?  i’ve found my share of lost dogs, and those with addresses i have safely returned home without having to involve the Humane Society.

and now for the best tags … made by Lucky Pet.  okay, granted, their website could use some work, and their enamel tags aren’t quite as slick as Red Dingo’s, but Lucky Pet’s metal tags are hands down THE best tags around.  i’ve used them for years and can attest to their durability.  and you’ll not find any tag with deeper, more permanent engraving. here is morley’s 5-year old tag …

stuff-271

sorry for the blurred out address and numbers … but as you can see for the other text — even after five years of being battered around with other tags and clips — the engraving is more than legible, and the ring-hole isn’t even close to wearing through.

for matea, i use a rivet/plate tag … and i love it.

stuff-16

they also have a great one for the cat in your life …

stuff-321

so, that’s my spiel on tags.  and if you don’t have tags on your pets — danglies or collar-plates — please reconsider!!!  even if you have your pet microchipped (which you should!), tags can save you and your pet a lot of grief.

and to end this entry, i can’t resist sharing with you this one outtake from the dog-tag shoot this morning.  this is what’s going on while i’m trying to shoot their tags …

stuff-221

no question that merrick LOVES matea.
