we hate litterbugs

lately there seems to be an excess amount of broken glass in the area … sidewalks, trails, and, it seems, even in the Grand River.  there have been times, when using a neighborhood “pass-through”, where the broken bottles smashed for ‘fun’ overnight riddle the sidewalk and the grass to such an extent that there is no safe passage for  dogs or bikes.  times like this, the dogs and i have had to tack on an extra 15 or 20 minutes to our walk just to avoid it.  and i like to think i live in a pretty decent neighborhood!

well, while enjoying a swim and frolic in the Grand River the other day, merrick came out bleeding …

paw-12

… and although not quite stitch-worthy, he’ll be wearing the vet-wrap for many days to come and sticking close to home with very limited activity. on this last point, he is not at all pleased.

paw-5-sized

so please, keep an eye out for dangers such as broken glass and pick up when you can.  myself, i’m going to start carrying an extra bag for glass pick up.  i might even have to start packing a broom and dustpan!  in the meantime, we’ve nicknamed this monkeynuts Flash and try to keep him amused with quieter games of tug.

merrick gets a bath

just a quickie entry … thought i’d share a few bath photos from earlier today.  merrick will be meeting his grandma for the first time tomorrow and i thought he could use a little sprucing up …

bath-49

you’d never know this little rescued, puppy-mill guy hates baths even more than he hates the camera … but with the right treats, and enough promises of “balls”, i managed to get him through his short shoot like a pro.

merrick-bath-trip

… even managing to squeeze in a towel shot.

bath-51

of course, no dog will ever own the tub — or the camera — quite the way morley did.

morley-bath-61

… or will they ever play the sympathy card with quite as much skill as the old man could.

urban merrick

i love graffiti … i mean good graffiti, not the crap that’s all about gang tags or just kids being stupid and disrespectful.  i’ve been trying to find a couple of good locations for graffiti to use as a backdrop and after much research and on-line searches, i scored.

of course, what’s an urban shoot without a little hair product?

graffiti-167

merrick wasn’t entirely impressed with his urban shoot.  he’s still rather mistrusting of the camera … and taking on the job of location scout, chauffeur, hair stylist, and photographer all in one doesn’t leave room for “acting couch” as well.  i had to take what i could get.

graffiti-221

still, we managed … and took the time to “enjoy” two different locations …

graffiti-294

… and i use the term “enjoy” loosely as we had to be somewhat careful with our steps through the Parkway underpass train tunnel.

graffiti-85-edit

this is one of  my favorite shots …

graffiti-131

… and if you come to Woofstock this year, i’m hoping you’ll see it on my t-shirt.  :)  … the new scruff of scruffy dog photography.

the tunnel was awesome … until, of course, we heard the train rumbling far down the tracks, heading our way.

graffiti-309

back at home we required a bit of a clean-up … waterless shampoo to get the Alberto hair paste out … and mineral oil for a large spot of grease on one of merrick’s paws.  i’m sure the entire time he was thinking i was insane.

graffiti-77-edit

so … if you’re local to Kitchener and would like to incorporate more of an urban flavor into your shoot, we’ve got the locations to suit!  and if you know of any other awesome walls of graffiti in the area, drop us a line … we’ll be sure to check it out!

the newest member of the scruffies pack

as most of you know, we had to say goodbye to sweet, old man morley last week.  as he struggled with a brain tumor, i’d noticed several weeks ago that he wasn’t wagging his tail as much.  it had nothing to do with pain, but more from confusion, and perhaps a lack of interest in life.  so … knowing that nothing on this earth made morley happier than another terrier (or any dog for that matter), i made a move which couldn’t have been more perfect.

meet merrick …

studio-bed-6

you met him first here, but i wanted to be sure about this little goober before i made any formal introductions.

third-day-21

here’s a little about his story …

some weeks ago, back in february, someone sent me a kijiji ad for something … while there i plugged in “wirehaired” and came up with an ad for this little guy.   as most of you know, all of my dogs have been rescues or from shelters.   i do NOT condone buying your dog off of kijiji or craig’s list, and certainly not from a pet store.   but after a little digging on the poster’s other ads i could tell that this boy was being used as a stud dog for what i can only hope is a small puppymill or barnyard breeder.

i’d initially sent the ad to a friend who had talked about getting a family dog but was told they’d changed their mind … and i just let it go.  but as a few weeks passed and morley stopped wagging, i found myself thinking about this little, 5 yr old guy again.

these are the kijiji photos …

untitled-1
after a forty-five minute drive, we arrived at the farm with morley in tow.   the wife and their 8 yr old daughter brought the dog out while the farmer talked a bit to us.  the dog’s belly never left the ground and his head was hung low.   at the feet of the daughter, his eyes darted wildly from the ground to the girl, to the parents, to the ground again … utterly terrified.  if anyone shifted on that freezing, slushy laneway, he ducked even further and skittered to the side, no doubt expecting a boot.

from the moment i laid eyes on him i knew he was the worst fear case i have personally seen … and i knew we had to get him out of there.   with his belly still dragging on the ground and his tail tucked so tightly i wasn’t sure he even had a tail, we walked him down the drive through icy slush and water … only with morley did he perk up a little. i handled his ears, his mouth, played with his paws just to see how he was … i’ve never encountered more fear-based submission before.   in fact, when i first went to pet him, i truly believed he was going to bite me.  as it turned out, i even got a kiss when i picked him up for the second time.

we walked him down the long drive several times … partly so that my partner and i could talk, but mostly to get the hell away from his abusers and get some kind of an idea what he was like.

i didn’t try to negotiate a better price … i was too sick to my stomach.   i paid $125 to get him out of there.   now, i do realize this is a slippery slope … giving my hard-earned money to these people to get this dog out of that situation, but i KNEW — given his incredible fear — that no one else was going to do it.   he was going to end up dead or — at best — sold to another breeder … and this little guy deserved a lot more than that.

during the drive home, i was literally shaking and working hard not to throw up … i was so upset.  partly from fear of not knowing what we had just gotten ourselves into, but mostly because the thought of me contributing to a sale-for-profit for a dog is sickening to me.

once home, we took him and matea on an hour pack-walk. this set the tone, and after a few weeks of careful and highly-choreographed interactions, these two are well on their way to forging an incredible relationship as he slathers her with kisses on a routine basis.

besides having to neuter merrick, he came with a full load of roundworms, and a raging urinary tract infection that has required two rounds of antibiotics so far.  he’s also on natural remedies for crystals and the infection — hydrangea and colloidal silver — as well as other much needed supplements along with his raw diet.  the scabs across his body have healed, and because i was able to secure his last vaccination records we weren’t forced to  bombard his system with those as well.

and today — four weeks later — he’s pretty healthy … although his ribs and spine are still a little too prominent.

day-8-18

he’s absolutely the worst fear case i have personally encountered.   they always say that you get the dog you need, not necessarily the one you want.  merrick is totally that case.  i will learn much from this incredible boy as i work to build his confidence in the world and with people.  honestly, once this boy is rehabbed i’ll have dealt with just about every dog issue out there except for severe people-aggression.  so, we both have much to learn, even though i can’t imagine a better place for him.

i have also discovered that balls are this boy’s doorway …

jump1

if you have a ball, you have his attention, no matter what’s going on in the scary world around him.

sixth-day-33

triptych2

in fact, most of my photos of merrick in these early days do, and will, involve a ball.  even to get him to pose for the camera, a ball is required to overcome his fear of the shutter … because he really is pretty camera shy.

merrick-diptych

merrick-day19-16

he’s also got the most wicked underbite ever, which often gives the impression he’s smiling …

day-12-48

studio-bed-2

but i know this little guy is definitely smiling when he deals with matea … he adores her and acts like her long-lost puppy.  i wasn’t able to capture his tongue in the shot below … it’s too fast … but he definitely loves giving kisses.

merrick-bathroom-9

so, that’s merrick.  you’ll be seeing more of him as the weeks and months unfold, and he becomes braver in this bright new world … a world full of balls.

and just a final note on buying your puppy from a farm … please know that just because it’s a farm in the country does NOT necessarily mean that your pup has enjoyed it’s country life.  and i can assure that its parents certainly aren’t!   in most cases, these “farm” pups are the product of puppymills … bred purely for profit with zero regard for health, genetics and socialization … and definitely no regard for animal welfare.  dogs are nothing more than agriculture … cheap livestock that can turn a quick profit for the farmer.  please, please, PLEASE don’t be fooled.  and please do your research.

tough times

we’ve had a tough week here at scruffy dog headquarters, with some pretty tough diagnoses.

as some of you already know, old scruffy morley — adopted at 9 years of age and now an energetic 14 1/2 — has lost the sight in one eye and is gradually losing the other.  in spite of appointments with an ophthalmologist no exact cause was determined and it was suspected he is dealing with a brain tumor.

canvas-46-sized

with no behavioral changes, however, i was determined not to believe the tumor-theory … however, last week morley had his first grand mal seizure, with several other small ones as well as facial twitches.  so yesterday he started phenobarbital in a hope to prevent any more seizures.  i may also add prednisone to the treatment plan to help shrink the suspected tumor, but i’m cautious to tax the old man’s liver too much.  so here’s to many more, seizure-free years for the sweetest of all scruffies.

8-year-old matea, my main girl, has been dealing with a rather significant case of bridging-spondylosis — a fusing of the spine.  so far it had only shown itself in passing stiffness and occasional moments of acute pain that would pass quickly. but this past sunday saw her in such excruciating pain that would not resolve and a visit to the emergency vet’s at midnight was necessary. but when a loading dose of butorphanol and metacam, along with continued tramadol, did nothing for her pain, there was concern that something more serious going on.  so … an emerg referral to the OVC (Ontario Vet College) was called in for us.  three hours monday night and 12 hours tuesday at the OVC, tests, rads, MRI and CT … initially there was the suspicion of a spinal tumor, to which i responded to the neurologist: “she doesn’t have a tumor” … it just didn’t fit with everything i’d seen over the past seven months.

as it turns out, she’s just got a really messed up spine … “benign bony overgrowth” … “chronic bony changes” … “no pathological fracture” … “exacerbated aging changes” …”chronic degenerative changes” … with the main cause of the pain originating in the bone and joint vs. nerves.  matea is past the majority of the pain for now, but will still be restricted during her course of Metacam … again, something i’m not keen on having her on long-term due to it’s potential liver damage, but there is the chance she’ll need the NSAID for the rest of her life.

so, it’s one day at a time around these parts … as we all snooze off the good drugs …

i want to thank all of my extremely supportive friends on flickr, as well as past clients who have expressed their concern, and to my very understanding current clients for their patience.  i’d also like to thank the numerous individuals who shared the waiting room with me during my 12-hours at the OVC on tuesday.  positive healing thoughts to all of your furred loved ones … and a special shout out to sweet-girl Georgia.  we’re thinking of you all.
