this boy bauer

yeah, i’m behind on blog entries … in fact, i’m not even posting all my client sneak peeks.  sorry, guys.  for those of you with blogs of your own, i think you’ll understand how hard it is to keep up, especially during these late summer months leading into fall when we’re at our busiest here at scruffy dog.  i promise to try harder …

in the meantime, i have to share with you all one of my favorite clients, bauer.

sdp_9008

if you’re thinking he looks familiar, you’d be correct.  bauer had his first shoot last winter. now it was time for some summer shots … time for wheat fields, green grass and sunsets … and the Cuz ball that bauer has coveted since i gave it to him at our last shoot … bad mommy and daddy for removing the squeaker!! ;)

sdp_8864

camera-shy, sometimes-skittish, and terrified of skiers during our shoot last winter, bauer’s my boy.  he’s work, don’t get me wrong … a careful balance between treats and building confidence, pushing him past his fears vs. pushing too far.  this is where experience with dogs is a must, and this is where i thrill at the results … when we can be out walking on a trail and i simply call bauer’s name and he spins around to come running back to me and the scary camera where only an hour ago he was desperate to find his dad’s legs to hide behind. brave bauer.

of course, even the wheat fields seemed a little daunting for this boy at first …

sdp_8989

but a short course of tossed-in treats quickly helped to overcome bauer’s fear of the wall of wheat, and he was diving in like a pro.

sdp_9092

sdp_8925

and with the high wheat conquered, enough treats to bolster him, it seemed that nothing could quash bauer’s new-found courage, even when staring down the previously terrifying lens …

sdp_8977

in fact,  he became a downright ham.

sdp_9098

then it was back to the playing field for some frisbee.  of course, i should have believed R.J. when he told me i needed to back up more…

sdp_9139

so i did.  i only wish bauer had been a little more energized.  i’ve seen this boy run and leap, and that afternoon, he just didn’t seem to have much in him and i know R.J. was really after some great leap shots.  then again, none of us is getting younger.  :)

sdp_9178

so we took another short walk in an adjoining field for a few more shots …

sdp_9181

caught the last of the rays …

sdp_9222

and because he’s a shy boy, i always like to leave ‘em with their tails held high … one of the last shots out of the camera …

sdp_9195

thanks, bauer, for yet another great shoot.  you’re the grooviest little black dude i know.  and thanks Karen and R.J. for all your support over the months, and mostly for loving your boy so much.  i look forward to your studio consult.

roman

meet Roman …roman-roth-41

it was a hot day down by the beaches for our shoot but Roman was a trooper. of course, i’ll be the first to admit that greyhounds can be one of the toughest models … and i’ve certainly had my share (pre-blog).  sedate, gracious, calm, but often uninterested in the camera and certainly — after having paid their dues on the track — i guess they’ve got more important things to do than ham it up for a camera.

roman-roth-26bw

roman was no exception to the rule.  just  this eye shot alone took over ten minutes of patience …

roman-roth-356

… and then sometimes you’ve just got to satisfy yourself with a butt shot …

roman-roth-64

the boardwalk was awesome for textures and lines, however Roman wasn’t keen on the wind through the long grasses.

roman-roth-44sel

and of course, the Queen Annes Lace is always one of my favorites to shoot in.

roman-roth-147bw

then back home … ya just gotta do a leg shot when you’re dealing with a leggy boy like this.

roman-roth-217

… and with a snoot like this, a nose shot, of course!

roman-roth-210

roman-roth-343

we did manage to get a little action out of the big man …

roman-roth-272bw

… but not much.

roman-roth-314

and then there was old girl kitty. maybe this was Molly.  i DO keep the dogs’ names straight but with walk-on kitties i make no promises.

roman-roth-389

at one point we tried to get Roman to relax on the couch, but he was having nothing of it.  i just loved the line of his haunches and his tail.

roman-roth-429

thanks for a great afternoon, Melanie and Marjo. i hope you enjoy your gallery — i know it’s a big one — and i’m looking forward to seeing you guys at your consult next weekend.

riley

i am SO far behind in posting on the blog … for those of you with your own blogs, perhaps you’ll understand.

as i try to keep up with shoots and the processing of new clients now that we’re back in business, the blog seems to be taking a back seat.  i just wish these scruffies had opposable thumbs so that they could do some of the administrative work around here!  earn their biscuits once in a while, you know?

so here’s my man, Riley … a wolfhound cross rescue …

riley-moore-17

… lovin’ our time in the wheat seemingly as much as i did.  originally i was going to ‘post’ this leash out of photo, and i still could, however, the more i look at it, the more i like it in there … the turquoise reflecting the blues in the sky, and the line of it leading to where you know Riley’s mom is standing as he gazes up at her with love.  but hey, maybe that’s just me.

riley-moore-43

and what can i say about wheat? i LOVE shooting in wheat … but alas, they offer such a short shooting season … the fields are coming down fast.

riley-moore-90

riley-moore-181

when using a wheat field as a backdrop we always stay within the first couple of feet of the field, often staying on the outside of the wheat since a lot of dogs don’t like entering longer grasses.  in this case, Riley didn’t mind venturing into the field a short way, following the row left by the tractor tires.  i’m always conscientious about not damaging the crop, being a former farm girl myself.

riley-moore-94

then off to the woods …

riley-moore-265

and oh, the mosquitoes.  what i do for art.

riley-moore-258sel

riley-moore-304

and then, of course, everyone’s gotta let loose once in a while.  Riley’s tongue almost rivals my own girl’s …

riley-moore-330

then back home with those grubby paws …

riley-moore-368choc

… and that gorgeous scruffy face …

riley-moore-452

of course, we can’t forget kitty.  gosh, i think her name was molly, but i could be wrong.  she just talked and talked and talked and talked …

riley-moore-486

i just loved Riley’s front door and had to work at some shots there.

riley-moore-558

thanks for a pleasant shoot Riley and Joan.

riley-moore-627choc

of course, Riley’s mom has already been to the studio to place her order … yeah, i’m that far behind in posting … but i still had to share with you all.

i know i didn’t make it easy on you, Joan, giving you such a huge gallery of images to choose from.  i just couldn’t keep my lenses off your gorgeous boy.  i can’t wait to see his photobook and canvas and other stuff when they come in!

we’re back!

… and busy as ever.

moved in, unpacked, with still some organizing to do at the scruffy dog studio, we’re rocking and rolling over here.  with a few delays and a number of postponed shoots due to the constant rain so far this summer, the cameras are clacking away once again.

and what could be better than the wheat fields being waist-high and ripe?  probably one of my favorite venues, they are SO ready, so although we’re pretty booked, I’m always happy to oblige a willing wheaty subject.

here’s my latest wheat-happy subject … wolfhound-cross Riley …

riley-moore-58-72dpi

stay tuned for many more wheat-field shots of this big lovely man.  i simply couldn’t get enough.
